Rushaga Sector Gorilla Trekking

Rushaga Sector, in the far south of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, has more habituated gorilla families than any other sector — and it’s the only place in Uganda offering the four-hour gorilla habituation experience alongside standard trekking.

Key Highlights

  • Highest number of habituated gorilla families of any Bwindi sector
  • The only sector offering the gorilla habituation experience
  • Located in southern Bwindi, close to the Mgahinga and Rwanda border region
  • Hilly terrain with several lodges overlooking the Virunga volcanoes
  • Easy to combine with Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in one southwestern Uganda route

Why Choose Rushaga

With the widest selection of habituated families in the park, Rushaga offers the most flexibility on permit availability, particularly useful when booking closer to your travel dates. It’s also the only sector where you can extend a standard trek into the full habituation experience, spending up to four hours with a family instead of the standard hour.

Getting There and Staying Nearby

Rushaga sits close to the Rwanda border and roughly an hour’s drive from Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, making it a natural base if you’re combining two gorilla treks or continuing overland into Rwanda. Several lodges here look directly out over the Virunga volcanoes.

See our first-time gorilla trekking guide for trek logistics, or compare Rushaga against Buhoma, Ruhija and Nkuringo on our main gorilla trekking page.
