Ruhija suits travelers who want gorilla trekking without the busier trailhead atmosphere of Buhoma or Rushaga, and it’s a natural stop for anyone combining gorillas with serious birding — the surrounding forest holds several Albertine Rift endemics rarely seen elsewhere. The altitude means cooler mornings and, for some, a slightly tougher trek due to thinner air on steeper stretches.
Getting There and Staying Nearby
Ruhija is accessible from both the Buhoma side and the Kabale/Lake Bunyonyi side of the park, making it a flexible stop depending on your route through southwestern Uganda. Lodge options are fewer and generally simpler than Buhoma’s, though several comfortable mid-range options overlook the forest.
