Gorilla Trekking in Ruhija

Treks start with a briefing at the Ruhija park office, where mornings are chilly enough for a fleece. Groups are allocated to one of the sector’s habituated families, and trails drop from the ridge into steep, forested valleys — so the walk back up at altitude is often the hardest part of the day. Trek length depends on where the family has moved and can range from under an hour to most of the day. Birding in Ruhija

Ruhija is the best birding base in Bwindi. The Mubwindi Swamp trail descends through forest to a papyrus swamp, a full day’s walk with a specialist guide, and is one of the few places to look for Grauer’s (African green) broadbill. Other Albertine Rift endemics around Ruhija include the handsome francolin, Rwenzori turaco, Archer’s robin-chat and several sunbirds and warblers. Why Choose Ruhija?

• A quieter experience: fewer lodges and visitors than Buhoma or Rushaga.
• Outstanding birding right from the lodges, ideal for keen birders and their companions.
• A good second trek: a different landscape and families from Buhoma or the southern sectors.
• A useful link on the road between Buhoma and Kabale or Lake Bunyonyi.

Ruhija is less suited to travellers worried about fitness, as the altitude and steep valleys make many treks demanding. For gentler terrain and more lodges, compare Buhoma; for the best permit availability, Rushaga.

Getting to Ruhija

• From Buhoma: about 2.5–3 hours on a scenic road through the forest.
• From Kabale or Lake Bunyonyi: about 2.5–3 hours.
• From Entebbe: a full day by road via Mbarara and Kabale.
• By air: flights to Kihihi or Kisoro, then about three hours by road.

Roads to Ruhija are unpaved and can be slow after rain; a 4x4 is essential.

Where to Stay in Ruhija

Ruhija has a small number of lodges, mostly mid-range with a few upmarket options, many with wide views over the forest from the ridge. Because there are fewer rooms, book early for the busy months. Bring warm layers: evenings are cold at this altitude, and many lodges have fireplaces.

Best Time to Trek in Ruhija

Gorilla trekking and birding run all year. The drier months, June to September and December to February, make the steep trails easier. Birding is excellent all year, and especially rewarding from November to April when migrants are present. Rain and mist are possible in any month at this altitude.
