Days 1–2

Bwindi Impenetrable NP

Fly from Entebbe to Bwindi. A morning scheduled flight from Entebbe to the airstrip nearest your trekking sector — about one and a half to two hours, depending on stops. Your driver-guide meets you and takes you to your lodge in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The afternoon is free for a short village or nature walk, and your guide goes through the next day’s trek with you. Gorilla trekking. After an early breakfast you report to the sector headquarters for the ranger briefing, then set off with your group of up to eight people to find your assigned gorilla family. The walk can take from under an hour to most of the day; once you reach the gorillas you spend one hour with them. Back at the lodge, the evening is yours.

What's Included

Your quoted price covers accommodation for every night on the route, all ground transport in a private 4x4 with an experienced driver-guide, and park entry fees for each park visited, including the gorilla trekking permit. Fuel and the driver-guide's costs across the full route are built into the quoted price rather than billed separately.

Excluded, as with every Uganda itinerary we quote: international flights, visa fees, travel insurance, tips for your driver-guide and gorilla trekking porters, and personal spending such as drinks and souvenirs. We itemise all of this clearly when we send your formal quote, so nothing arrives as a surprise once you're on the ground.

Lodging across the route is mid-range by default — the properties can be swapped for budget or luxury alternatives at the same locations without changing the underlying route, activities or duration. Tell us which tier fits your trip and we'll send a revised, fully itemised quote.

Who This Itinerary Suits

Travellers with only a few days, business travellers adding a trek to a work trip, and visitors combining Uganda’s gorillas with a safari in Kenya, Tanzania or Rwanda. You need to be at least 15 and reasonably fit for a long forest hike. If you can spare four more days, the 7-day gorilla and big game safari adds Lake Mburo and Queen Elizabeth National Park for a much fuller trip.

Three Ways to Do a 3-Day Gorilla Trip

OptionHow it worksBest for
Fly from EntebbeScheduled flights both ways; most time at the lodgeComfort and short trips; higher cost
Drive from EntebbeAbout 9–10 hours each way by road; trek on Day 2Lower budgets; long days in the vehicle
Drive from KigaliAbout 4–5 hours to Bwindi’s southern sectors or MgahingaTravellers flying into Rwanda

By road from Entebbe, Days 1 and 3 are spent almost entirely driving, so the trip works but is tiring. Starting in Kigali is often the most efficient choice if you are already in Rwanda or can fly there, but compare the cost of crossing the border and of a visa for both countries. See gorilla trekking from Kigali vs Entebbe and domestic flights in Uganda.

Choosing Your Trekking Sector

Your gorilla permit is issued for one of Bwindi’s four sectors, and your lodge should be in the same area. On a short trip we usually suggest Buhoma for its gentler terrain and easy airstrip access, or Rushaga in the south, which has the most gorilla families and the best chance of a permit at short notice and is the natural choice from Kigali. Ruhija suits birders, and Nkuringo suits fit trekkers who want volcano views. Our gorilla trekking guide compares all four.

What a 3-Day Gorilla Trip Costs

The gorilla permit is the largest fixed cost: currently US$800 per person for foreign non-residents. The rest depends on your lodge and whether you fly or drive. By road on a budget, a 3-day trip can come to roughly US$1,300–2,000 per person sharing, including the permit. Flying adds the cost of two light-aircraft flights but saves two long days on the road. Our Uganda safari cost guide explains each part of the price, and we send an itemised quote for your dates.

Planning Tips for a Short Trip

  • Book the permit first. On a fixed three-day window there is no spare day, so secure the permit before flights and lodges — four to six months ahead for June to September and December to February.
  • Leave a buffer around your international flights. Arrive in Entebbe the evening before Day 1 if you can, so a delayed long-haul flight does not affect your trek.
  • Pack for light aircraft. Domestic flights have strict soft-bag luggage limits; see luggage limits on domestic flights.
  • Hire a porter. With only one trek, it is worth making the day as comfortable as possible.
  • Take out travel insurance that covers trip disruption — see insurance for gorilla trekking.

Extending Your Trip

With a fourth day you can add a second gorilla trek in another sector, the four-hour gorilla habituation experience in Rushaga, or golden monkey tracking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. With a fifth, a night at Lake Bunyonyi makes a relaxing end to the trip. For a full safari with game drives and a boat cruise, look at the 10-day itinerary.

3-Day Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Safari FAQs

Yes. Three days is enough for one gorilla trek if you fly to Bwindi or start from Kigali. By road from Entebbe it is possible but very tiring.

Light-aircraft schedules occasionally change with the weather. Because the trek is on Day 2, a delay on Day 1 rarely affects it; arriving in Uganda the day before gives extra protection.

Not realistically. Treks start with an early-morning briefing at the park, so you need to be at a lodge near Bwindi the night before.

No. Bwindi is too far from Kampala for a day trip by road or air, which is why the shortest practical gorilla trip is three days.

No. Every visitor gets the same one hour with the gorillas, whether their trip lasts three days or three weeks.
